Over the years, the new house had undergone various design interventions, resulting in a number of unsettling spaces and architectural vocabulary. It was essentially a small post and beam structure from the 1940s, encased in fresh stucco, glass, and metal.
The main purpose of this Hollywood Hills property was to make it more pleasant for a sophisticated young art collector and his growing family.

The purpose of this project was to create a completely functional second house capable of hosting huge events and overnight visitors but owing to zoning restrictions, we couldn’t add a single square foot.
Individual homes and public spaces, as well as buildings, interiors, and furnishings, are among the Archers’ work.
The intricate tile work and carved plaster ornamentation created an intriguing setting for the customers’ largely late-twentieth-century furnishings and art collections. Prior to their purchase, the house had undergone a major renovation, and some questionable choices had been made, such as uneven flagstone kitchen floors.

House of Max Palevsky (1968) Craig Ellwood is based in Palm Springs. The sought-after Southern California architect was born Jon Nelson Burke in Clarendon, Texas, and famously nicknamed himself ‘Craig Ellwood’ after a booze store called ‘Lords and Elwood’ across the street from his first office. Ellwood was acknowledged professionally for merging the formalism of Mies van der Rohe with the informal style of California modernism, despite never being a licensed architect (he studied structural engineering for five years through UCLA extension night school).
Throughout the interior trim features, a post and beam framework interacts with new brickwork. On most wood and masonry surfaces, white is painted in a variety of subtle tints and finishes, ranging from dead-flat to high-gloss lacquer.

Studio Apartment (1958) Renaat Braem is a Belgian artist based in Deurne. Braem, a former student of Le Corbusier, rose to prominence as one of Belgium’s most influential mid-century architects and urban planners, as well as a well-known architectural critic. He and his wife, graphic designer Els Severin, built their home in the Antwerp district of Deurne. Natural materials and muted tones – dark wood paneling and rough plastering – are combined with Bauhaus-style color accents in the mostly open-plan design.
Their client, an art advisor, and collector, returned to Los Angeles after a decade in Paris and purchased an ordinary 1980s condominium flat with the hopes of transforming it into a spectacular living and entertainment place with a clean backdrop for constantly changing art displays.
The architectural interventions, which were based on materials found in the building’s large public spaces, were inspired by Stern/Candela.
