It is believed that Albert Einstein once said “The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before.” In recent years, women in design have been innovating and creating amazing projects, taking what it means to be an interior designer to new heights. In celebration of this, we hope to inspire you by presenting five of the world’s finest studios that are run by women in design.

Arizona native Amy Lau received a masters in fine and decorative art at the renowned Sotheby’s Institute of Art before acting as the design director of the Lin-Weiberg Gallery in New York City for five years. It was in 2001 that she founded her company, Amy Lau Design. Her work has since been praised by Architectural Digest for being an “All-encompassing vision of inspired, artful living that elevates mere finesse into the realm of pure magic”. Her training translates into her interiors as a fusion of art and design, each with a warm and expressive aesthetic, as well as attention to detail. She achieves this through her interpretation of landscapes, and even incorporates natural materials into her projects.
Canadian Jaclyn Genovese’s career in design began in the world of fashion when she opened her own boutique, Jacflash, in 2007. Since then her career path has shifted and she now runs Spaces by Jacflash, her own interior design firm that opened in 2013. She prides herself on her approach to design, catering each project directly to her clients’ lifestyle and aesthetic preferences, something that carried over from her experience in fashion where she would tailor outfit recommendations based on the same criteria. This approach has gained her recognition in several publications, and she even won Interior Designer of the Year at the 2018 Notable Awards.
Andrea Flores and Lucía Soto are the female masterminds behind Comité de Proyectos, an interior design company based in Mexico City that was founded in 2014. For the duo, the most important part of any project is blending the client’s personality with their interiors. They do this by providing the perfect solutions for any space, each combined with their aesthetic approach. They also want their projects to communicate what moves them and feel that interior design is the ideal medium, using collectible objects to truly convey this.
